Side Quest Candles
Sometimes the side quest becomes a whole thing.
One day, I had fully planned to tidy my bedroom.
Or, more accurately, tackle the floor-drobe.
But I could not face that particular mundane task.
Then I spotted a big candle in my bathroom and thought:
“I could make candles out of that.”
So I did.
Then I thought, “Oh. That was actually really fun.”
So naturally, I bought a mould.
And just like that, Side Quest Candles was born.
What started as a very convenient way of avoiding tidying my bedroom has somehow become quite a big thing in my life.
I now raid charity shops, ask friends to save old candles for me, collect leftover wax wherever I can, and I have made myself one very important promise:
I am not buying wax to make these candles. I
want Side Quest Candles to stay exactly what they started as — old wax being rescued, melted down and turned into something new. Make it stand out
I should probably point something out...
I have no idea how to make wax smell a particular way.
I do not have carefully measured fragrance oils, colour recipes or beautifully labelled scent charts.
If I have some wax that smells lovely and some that smells of absolutely nothing, I put them together and hope for the best.
Sometimes, if I find a coloured wax crayon, that might get plopped in too.
So I cannot confidently tell you what the scent is.
I cannot promise what exact colour your candle will be.
And I definitely cannot promise that every single one will come out perfectly.
Because, let's face it...
I am not a candle maker.
I am an illustrator who got distracted by a candle while avoiding her floor-drobe.
A little wonky. A lot lovely.
Why “Side Quest”?
Beautiful Chaotic Mess was supposed to be about illustration.
Then zines.
Then markets.
Then came books.
And then one day I should have been tidying my bedroom...
Instead, I made a candle.
Naturally.
Welcome to the side quest.
Handmade in Cornwall from reclaimed wax, curiosity, questionable experimentation and probably a cup of Earl Grey nearby.
