Garden Aventures

The Vegetable Patch That Grew a Whole New World

In 2025, I turned 40.

I decided that I needed to do something wonderfully middle-aged, so I planted a vegetable patch. It also made perfect financial sense... Buying a packet of seeds is much cheaper than buying vegetables from the supermarket!

What I didn't expect was just how much my daughter Delilah, who was five at the time, would fall in love with it.

First, I dug over the garden, and my friend Terry helped me build the raised bed and fill it with lovely fresh soil. Then came the planning. I spent hours researching which vegetables liked growing together and which absolutely hated each other. I carefully planned my tiny patch so that everyone would be happy.

Finally, we planted the seeds.

The next morning I rushed outside to see what had happened...

Nothing.

A week later...

Still nothing.

If you're anything like me, when you start something new, you want results immediately. Waiting was torture!

Then, about two weeks later, tiny green shoots began pushing their way through the soil.

I DID a little happy dance.

It was working.

While researching, I also discovered a little gardening trick called cold stratification. If you put certain seeds in the fridge before planting them, it tricks them into thinking they've been through winter, helping them wake up and start growing. Apparently, you're supposed to leave them there for about two weeks...

I managed for a few days.

Luckily, the seeds didn't seem to mind.

That year we planted lettuce, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, peppers, sweet peppers, carrots, radishes, onions, sunflowers, sweet peas and nasturtiums.

I even gave Terry some seeds. He had a greenhouse, so naturally it became a competition.

Who could grow the best vegetables?

It reminded me of The Tortoise and the Hare.

Terry usually won at first because everything in his greenhouse grew much faster. But when the hot weather arrived, his plants dried out much sooner than mine.

My tomatoes just kept going.

Long after summer had finished and autumn had arrived, I was still harvesting tomatoes. I had so many that I genuinely didn't know what to do with them.

The lettuce gave us salad after salad, and the carrots...

Oh my goodness.

They were the sweetest carrots I have ever tasted.

In the end, I invited the children from our street into the garden to pull up carrots, pick strawberries and eat tomatoes straight from the plants. Watching their faces light up was worth far more than any money I could have saved on the weekly food shop.

The little boy next door still asks me when my carrots will be ready again.

That makes me smile.

If I'm honest, my grand plan to reduce the food bill didn't quite work because I ended up giving most of it away...

...and I wouldn't change a thing.

I also bought two blueberry bushes—one for my wonderful stepdad Bob and one for me. Sadly, Bob has since passed away.

As for my blueberry bush...

Well...

Mine somehow turned into a willow tree.

To this day, I have absolutely no idea how that happened. I bought blueberry bushes.

One of the best things I discovered was nasturtiums. They are almost impossible to kill and act like little sacrificial plants. Caterpillars and blackfly absolutely adore them, which means they leave your lettuce and tomatoes alone for a while.

They became my gardening superheroes.

The strawberries, however, were a complete mystery.

Every evening I would spot the perfect strawberry, almost ready to pick.

The next morning...

Gone.

Not half eaten.

Not dropped on the floor.

Just... gone.

That was when my imagination started asking questions.

What if tiny enchanted beings lived in my garden and stole the strawberries?

What if one of them secretly swapped the DNA of plants just for fun?

What if blackfly weren't just blackfly?

What if every strange little thing happening in my vegetable patch had a magical explanation?

Being me, I couldn't stop thinking about it.

I began sketching tiny creatures, scribbling notes, inventing personalities and rewriting ideas. Every walk around the garden became another story waiting to be discovered.

Before I knew it, my little vegetable patch had grown into an entirely new world.

A world filled with Grandfather Snails, Strawberry Snatchers, the Wise Old Toad... and many more Enchanted Garden Beings.

Sometimes the smallest adventures grow into the biggest stories.

More From Our First Vegetable Patch

The Tiny Veg Patch

This is it! Our little vegetable patch! It isn’t huge, it is fancy, but to us it is full of possibilities.

After digging the ground, moving the stones out, adding fresh soil and building the climbing frame, we stood back and admired our hard work. All that was left to do was plant the seeds and WAIT!

The Beautiful Chaotic Mess Garden

This little corner of our garden might not look like much, but it is where many of our adventures began. My She-Shed, Wildlife pond and the veg patch all sit together in one small space, proving that you don’t need a huge garden to create something magical.

My tiny patch of Cornwall became the place where we grew veg, discovered wildlife, made memories together… and,….. without realising it at the time, planted the very first seeds of Enchanted Garden Beings.

My Delilah Planting Seeds

Even though I’d carefully planned where every seed was supposed to go, Delilah had other ideas! She happily sprinkled them wherever she thought they should grow. In the end, I gave up trying to make everything perfect and let her take over!

The Salad Surprise

There is nothing quite like growing your own food. I picked fresh lettuce straight from the garden, washed it, made a salad and sat down to eat.

It wasn’t until I almost finished that I noticed a little caterpillar happily enjoying lunch too!

As a vegetarian, I was very relieved I’d spotted my tiny garden helper before my last mouthful. Needless to say, the lettuce got checked very carefully after that!

It’s funny now, but it was another reminder that when you grow food naturally, you’re sharing your garden with all kinds of little beings!

My FIRST Carrot!!!

A carrot never tasted so good! It was worth the wait!
